How can a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution be innovative, inclusive and collaborative?
The agreement among 175 countries to form an ‘international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution’ is an extraordinary opportunity for globally coordinated action – the need of the hour. Ahead of the first Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) meeting scheduled for 28 November 2022, key stakeholders that are shaping the agreement from the perspectives of government, business as well as civil society are calling for a global agreement which sets common goals, rules and obligations that member states will be required to implement within their national jurisdictions. Plastic circularity, fostered by a full life cycle approach and aimed at keeping plastic in the economy and out of the environment, is imperative.
In partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF), this plenary discussion brings together policymakers, leaders from the private sector and businesses, youth representatives, civil society, and the investment community to share views in setting up the path towards an internationally legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.
