Project Description
Transforming marine litter into new manufacturable materials through inclusive approaches
Heng Hiap Industries (HHI) is a Malaysian grown-owned recycler specialising in high-value recycled plastic. Since 2020, HHI has been committed to collecting and recycling collected Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) in the coastal and river areas of Johor.
To solve the problem of OBP which leaks into the environment and natural ecosystems if not collected, HHI has adopted a zero-waste business model in which 100% of the OBP collected is recycled or valorised.
HHI innovatively converts and customises the mechanical recyclable OBP into high-quality recycled products that can be used for high-end applications. For example, HHI has collaborated with a global leader in the chemical industry to create the first certified circular polymers. HHI converts the recovered non-mechanical recyclable OBP into pyrolysis oil through chemical recycling. The pyrolysis oil is then used by the chemical industry in their production process as an alternative to traditional fossil materials to make circular polymers.
Plastic is thus kept as a valuable resource within the value chain, reshaping the way plastics are produced and recycled, , and addressing environmental and societal challenges in a lasting, meaningful way.
